Eastnor Probate Material - an Introduction

The will of James Rogge, 1545, Herefs RO 36/3/7

There are surviving probate documents for 112 Eastnor people, for the years between 1442 and 1700. The majority of these are wills, inventories and administration papers kept at the Herefordshire Record Office.  There are 75 discrete records there, which refer to 69 people. Here, all the documents relating to one person have  been gathered together in one file.  There are wills and supplementary papers for another 16 people kept at the National Archive.

There are also 27 entries in the court books of the bishops of Hereford, for whom there are no other suviving documents. For another two entries there are surviving wills in the Record Office. These books have been  calendered and it is from this publication that the notes included on this website have been drawn.  Calendar of Probate and Administration Acts 1407-1541 and Abstracts of Wills 1541-1581 in the Court Books of the Bishop of Hereford, edited by M.A. Faraday and E.J.L. Coles with introduction and index compiled by M.A. Faraday, British Record Society, London, 1989.
