Transcription of 1851 census

The census enumerator recorded the whole of the parish of Mapledurwell commencing at and including Hatch public house thence to and taking the cottages on both the Commons including the blacksmith’s shop thence southward to and taking the cottages on the east side of the village thence taking the cottages near the Church thence on to and taking White’s Farm thence back to the village and taking the houses on both sides of the street to including and terminating at and with the house of Mr Samuel Clarke.
Service in husbandry, discussed in the work of Ann Kussmaul and Nicola Verdun, whereby agricultural labourers lived as part of the farmer's family rather than in separate cottages is still practised in Mapledurwell in 1851.
