Mapledurwell Census 1811-1901

Census 1901

In 1811 there were 40 families in 35 houses. The population increased steadily from 160 in 1801, 172 in 1811, 190 in 1831 to 237 in 1881 when 57 houses were occupied, but fell to 207 in 49 houses in 1891. This was despite the fact that the numbers given for 1891 were for the civil parish to which previously detached parts of Nately Scures parish had been added. The significant drop in the number of houses between 1881 and 1891 may be explained by a disastrous fire in July 1881. Population then rose to 221 in 1911.

Immigration was small-scale in the mid to late 19th century the majority of villagers were born in the parish (63%), with others mainly coming from the surrounding rural parishes (31%). Population mobility increased until in 1901 only 30 per cent of the residents were born in Mapledurwell and 18 per cent of the population of 202 were born outside Hampshire, mainly in London (8) and the home counties. But even in 1901 more than 75 per cent of the population were born in the local area.
