A Benedictine Priory was founded at "Minster (Talcarne)" before 1190, by William de Bottreaux who granted the church of St Merteriana to St Serge,

The parish church is located in OS Grid Square SX3384 and was dedicated to St Thomas the Apostle.

All Saints Church dates from around the early 12th century and has been enlarged and altered over successive centuries, most notably: 15th century

Although sources for Exmoor's medieval history are scarce compared with neighbouring areas there is some interesting material.

The area around this ancient bridge on the river Barle is one of great natural beauty making it a magnet for tourists.

Lanacre Bridge

Lanacre or Landacre Bridge crosses the river Barle two miles west of Withypool village.

The Barle valley below Simonsbath in the heart of the former Royal Forest of Exmoor.
