1851 census

The whole of the parish of Winslade and Kempshott including Gander Down, Southwood Farm, the Turnpike Gate, Kempshott Park, the Kennels, Hackwood Farm and cottages, a lodge house in Hackwood Park and the village of Winslade and the whole of the parish of Dummer including Dummer Down, Dummer Grange, New Barn and Dummer village.

The enumerator, unnamed, for this census was particularly poor in spelling names and did not list any buildings in the village making identification impossible. The population of the parish was 409 living in 84 houses, one was unoccupied. Agriculture was the main occupation with a bailiff and five farmers (one a widow), working 1,900 acres and employing at least 52 men and boys. The true figure is probably higher as one farmer does not list how many labourers he employed. The majority of the male inhabitants worked on the land but there were also blacksmiths, bakers, shoemakers, carpenters, bricklayers and a worker on the rail road. Most of the women were described as servants but a few worked as needlewomen, shoe binders, a letter carrier and the school mistress. A somewhat high number, 17, called themselves paupers.

The vast majority of the inhabitants were born in Dummer or the surrounding area of north Hampshire.
