Inventories of Quaytown widows

Seamen and certainly passengers may have needed lodgings while waiting for vessels and all would have needed refreshments and entertainment, ships needed supplies and there were many other people around the harbour such as customs officials, harbour workers and fishermen wanting food and drink. It is not surprising that many widows supported themselves by keeping alehouses, shops and lodging houses in Quaytown.
These three probate inventories give a picture of such women’s homes in the 1670s.
