Will of William Wigg, yeoman, 1607

The Wigg family was active in the town from the early 16th century. Wigg’s will is notable for its charitable bequests and in particular for his funding for a pupil from Bramley where Wigg had been born at the free school Of the Holy Ghost. The pupil was to be 'kept in the rudiments of the Latin tongue ... [and] be encouraged to climb the tree of knowledge'.
