Will of Richard Collie/Colly, yeoman, 1619

Collie was a draper and a well off member of the ruling elite. He had a high tax assessment (£5) in 1603. He was fined as a draper in 1583 and was Warden of the Guild of the Holy Ghost in 1580. He had a tomb inscription (no longer visible) in the Liten, the grave yard of the Holy Ghost Chapel in Basingstoke which was recorded in Baigent and Millard, History of Basingstoke, 1889, 129:

"Here lyeth Richard Colly, and Dorothy his lovinge wife, were married 45 years together without debate or strife, and desired to be interred together in this space, hoping in heaven to have a certain dwelling place, shee died the 8th of September 1616 the 67th yeare of her age hee died the 4th of September 1619 the 73 yeare of his age."
