Will of John Davies, maltster 1688

Davies was a maltster who lived in Church Street, Basingstoke and owned The Ship Inn and a further property in Norden Hill. These assets were bequeathed to his two sons with whom his mother and wife lived. He also left money to his daughter’s three children. If his sons died without issue he wished £50 to be paid out of his estate to kinswomen living in Mortimer, Crookham and Elvetham. He also referred to bonds held in London by an attorney and a factor indicating trade with the city.
