Will of Henry Purchis, clothier, 1624

Purchis will was proved in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury and is held in the National Archives. This was usually because of interests outside the diocese but it may also be for reasons of status. He was a wealthy clothier with a house in Church St and left bequests of more than £200. Probably son of Thomas Purchis, dyer, 1586 who lived at Flaxpool and had property in Church St.  Son in law of William Weast, snr, yeoman 1612 (wife Clara). Bailiff 1620-1, Chief Burgess 1622; with Robert South  12d  apiece to poor 1624 for using Mrs Hatfield’s pulpit cloth.
