Will and inventory of Thomas Petty/Pettye, 1550

Petty left a simple, Protestant form of will bequeathing a generous 2s. to the parish church where he wished to be buried, and 12d to Sherfield on Loddon church, closer to his home (now known as Cuffaud). There is careful provision for his widow and bequests to children, godchildren, servants and 4d each to the poor of Basing, the main estate divided between two sons. There is an inventory listing a well-equipped house and farm with listed crops and stock valued at £21 11s. 6d. The preponderance of cattle over sheep reflects the position of the farm in the north of the parish on the claylands.
