Will and inventory of Thomas Hawterell, carpenter, 1557

Hawterell made his will in the Catholic reign of Philip and Mary, but the simplicity of the wording suggests this man was Protestant. Everything is left to his wife, with no mention of children. The simple house was well equipped and the goods included cheeses and bacon in the roof, hives to supply honey and other equipment for a largely self-sufficient household. His working tools (he was a carpenter), were specified, but the value of his estate, as a skilled craftsman, did not compare with those of the farmers.
