Will and inventory of Robert Melton, gentleman, 1640

Melton was a gentleman and lived in Holt, a detached part of the Nately Scures parish. He left money to Edward Browne, a baker in Reading, wishing him to accept his son William as an apprentice. He also left £1 to each of the churches in Up Nately and Nately Scures. He was a wealthy man with an inventory totalling £211 including a debt of £50 due to him. The inventory lists a bible, linen thread and a linen wheel, 1126 cheeses with presses and racks. He had cows, bullocks, pigs and large stocks of grain.
