Will and Inventory of Margaret Savage, widow, 1568

Savage provided for burial in the churchyard and made generous bequests of 2d. to the cathedral, 12d. to Basing church and 12d. to the poor of the parish. There were specific bequests to all the children, the son received the equipment to work the farm, the two unmarried daughters her clothing and beds and bedding together with their monetary bequests under their father’s will (John, d.1557) when they married. There were many bequests to individuals of a sheep or cow, but only minor bequests to the two married daughters who would already have been provided for. A large flock of sheep but also cattle and horses, with a barn full of wheat, barley oats and peas and winter wheat in the field. Oatmeal is specifically mentioned. A large, well equipped house with brewing and cheese-making equipment. Value £71 6s. 6d.
