Will and Inventory of John Wrothe alias Butler, yeoman, 1588

John Wrothe, also known as John Butler had a strong connection with North Waltham. He left 20d. each for the repairs of Cliddesden, Farleigh Wallop and North Waltham churches, gave 2s. for the poor of North Waltham and asked for his knell bell to be rung there. Feather beds and bedding, brass and pewter pots all speak of improvements to the living standards of the yeomanry in the late 16th century. Two sorts of debts were listed in the inventory: those which the assessors hoped to recover and 'desperate debts' which they expected to write off.
