Will and Inventory of John Swathing/Swathen, 1572

Rather than leave money to the poor Swathing/Swathen left a quarter of wheat for both the poor of Basing and of Basingstoke. He also left special bequests to his godsons and their children, and to his wife’s daughters, all these with the surname Cowdrey, also to three of his servants. The rest was to his wife Margaret, who was his executrix. A considerable acreage of wheat, and grain in the barn, and equipment in the barn, also poultry and pigs, but there was no mention of stock in the inventory although he left both sheep and cattle in his will. Value £35 16s. 0d.
