Will and Inventory of John Alston/Alstone, tailor, 1580

Alston/Alstone, a tailor, requested burial in Basing churchyard. He seems to have died young, leaving six underage children. He left his entire estate to his wife with a bequest of £24 to be divided between his two sons (when they reached 21), and four daughters (when they married) but, being anxious to preserve the family heritage, his property was to be recovered for his children by his named overseers in the event of his wife remarrying. There is no hint in his inventory of his work as a tailor. It listed the furniture and equipment of a house and small mixed farm all valued at £61 6s.
