Watery Lane school

Watery Lane was built c.1912 as a boys school to relieve pressure on the parochial school in Middle Street. It was provided with a large garden. Average attendance rose to 180 in 1930. After 1947 it became a mixed school with 236 pupils and nine teachers in 1960. In 1970 the children moved out and St Michael’s infant school moved in with 159 infants aged 5 to 7. In 1971 it became a first school for children aged 4 to 9 and had 152 pupils in 1998 with six teachers.
