Some master mariners and their ships

Many shipowners were also mariners although they often found other masters for their ships but there were several men who owned or were the managing owners of a single ship, which they sailed themselves. A ship could be an excellent investment but there was also the risk of loss. For that reason many owners were actually managing owners and had sleeping partners, often inland farmers and tradesmen, who held shares in the ship.
