Rye Cottage in Mapledurwell

Rye Cottage was the messuage for a copyhold held of the manor of Mapledurwell.
It is the youngest cruck building yet dated in Hampshire, the felling dates of the timbers being 1486/7. It is half-hipped at both ends and all the crucks are truncated. Of the three cruck bays, the upper end bay retains original floor joists laid longitudinally with a trimmer for a ladder stair. Beyond is a one-bay extension in the same alignment that has been dated to 1525/6. This is of the same height and width of the earlier cruck house and yet is of box frame construction.
