The Perriton unloading at Minehead c.1885

The Perriton, a 90-ton topsail schooner, was the last ship to be built at Minehead and made her maiden voyage on 17 June 1881.

In this photograph by Herbert Henry Hole who had a studio at Friday Street, Minehead, Perriton  is being unloaded with the help of a steam crane. Behind is the Ridler warehouse, now a residential building called Tides Reach, and to the left the Customs House, demolished to provide access to the 1901 pier. In the foreground are the Argo on the left and the John and William. The port of Minehead lost the right to register its own shipping in 1835 and thereafter its ships were registered at Bridgwater.
