Old road from Frackford to Gallox Cross

Before the turnpike era travellers to Minehead could by-pass Dunster by leaving the road at Timberscombe and those going to Watchet or Bridgwater could cross the Avill at Frackford Bridge and take a road known as Holway via Gallox Cross to Carhampton across the present deerpark. The road from Frackford Bridge was closed between 1772 and 1792 when it was described as manor waste,[1] probably to protect the income of the tollgate at the bottom of West Street, but it had the effect of sending yet more through traffic into Dunster’s streets.
