Merriman Road, Street

Samuel T. Clothier, William S. Clark’s son-in-law and clerk to the urban district council, was an unqualified architect who designed the first local authority houses in Merriman Road in 1911—12. They were in similar style to the houses he designed in 1913 for William S. Clark in Barn Close. Street urban district council laid out streets of houses of red brick and render between High Street and Middle Leigh in 1920, extending in the next decade as far as Overleigh. By 1974 the council had built 874 houses, and 150 bungalows for the elderly.
