Manor House, Somerton

This house was built by Sir John Strangways, owner of Somerton St Cleers manor, an estate which had no manor house. Having no suitable plot of his own he leased a parcel of land in the market place to build his house known as the Great House. It had a large hall and parlour, and it is this section which survives.<?xml:namespace prefix = o />

Unfortunately after Sir John's death in 1666 it was divided up, used as public houses and shops and much of it was rebuilt including the southern section in 1796, later used as a bank. The hall and parlour were refronted, probably in the early 19th century and a new entrance door has been cut through the site of one of the windows. Two Hamstone fireplaces and much original plasterwork survive inside.
