Inventory of Henry Smith, yeoman, 1693

Smith was the son of Henry Smith who died in 1691. He also farmed 8 a. of Corpus Christi College, Oxford, copyhold no 10 but he clearly had more land either form Winchester College or sublet from another copyholder as his inventory lists 50 a. of crops. He possessed 150 quarters of malt valued at £150. Smith died of smallpox and the bailiff working for Corpus Christi College was forbidden by his family (CCCO, Newlyn Letter no 26) to collect the usual best beast or heriot which inheriting copyholders traditionally had to pay on the death of the previous tenant.
