Halling, Portland Row

Quarrying chalk during the nineteenth century was labour intensive work requiring many men. Portland Row (now demolished) was on the Pilgrim's Way and provided housing for cement workers in the area and was named after Portland cement, which William Lee produced at his works from around 1854 onwards.
