Fragment of medieval wall, Bridgwater

Bridgwater castle was already in ruins by the 18th century although enough remained to provide a home and headquarters for the duke of Chandos’s steward. The duke demolished its eastern walls to lay out his new streets but the castle itself was only destroyed much later to build King Square. However, fragments like the Watergate survive. This section of the south wall was discovered only recently.
