Former White Horse inn, Dulverton

This is often said to be the inn in Blackmore's Lorna Doone.
It was in existence by 1790 and was kept by a succession of licensees including John Scott in 1800, John Kingdon in 1810 and George Tout in 1881. In 1901 it was kept by John Parkhouse and his wife Ann but they kept no resident staff and their sons worked elsewhere. However in 1921 renewal of Fred Carter's licence was refused. It had been tied to Hancock's brewery, Wiveliscombe since 1913.The average beer sales were 60 barrels a year.
