Former Red Lion, High Street, Dunster

The first Red Lion stood in the market place at the south end of the shambles in 1652. It must have been small as it stood in the market place with two shops adjoining it on the west but shortly afterwards the business moved to a house east of High Street. It was leased by the Allercott family, who owned the adjoining Three Cups, in the later 17th and 18th centuries. It was a large property with 2 ½ burgage rights in the marsh. Repair notices were served in 1803. It was still open in 1854 but closed shortly thereafter and the building was largely rebuilt.
