Former parish school

Geoffrey Fownes Luttrell built a parochial school with teacher’s house designed by J. P. St Aubyn in Middle Street in 1866. It was always too small and even having absorbed the 1890 infant building oposite, could only accommodate 240 juniors by 1903 when it was a council school with five classrooms. Fortunately or unfortunately of the 437 children registered average attendance was only 302. By 1914 the school took girls only but average attendance rose from 124 to 167 respectively in 1930. Aftre the school moved the building with the infant school opposite became a community learning centre.
