The former Mechanics Institute built in 1869

After closure of the Institute and its use as a museum until 1969, approval was given to subsequent occupants to alter the inner rooms, but the front elevation had to be preserved. Unfortunately irreversible damage was caused to the front of the building which was reconstructed as closely to the plans of the original 1869 building.
