Former Ebenezer Wesleyan Chapel, Mill Lane, Dunster

This was the first of three Weslyan Methodist chapels in Dunster. In 1811 Ebenezer chapel was created out of a stable in Mill Lane, the adjoining cottage became a manse and the premises were conveyed to trustees in 1813. Between 1815 and 1822 the only baptisms were the children of a succession of resident ministers but from 1820 there was a Sunday school. Membership remained small and a preacher declared in 1826 that it was not worth travelling to Dunster when there were often only 10 people in chapel. However in 1827 there were two Sunday services and one on Monday evenings.

In 1832 an unfinished house and adjoining buildings, including two shops, at the north-west end of West Street were bought for a chapel, vestry and Sunday schoolroom. The old house and chapel were bought and conveyed to trustees in 1839 for a Wesleyan day school.
