Detail of will of John Hope, 1544

This shows the beginning of the will of John Hope of Bosbury, written in 1544. Most wills follow the same pattern, beginning with 'In the name of God, Amen', then the date and the name of the testator. As was usual in medieval and early modern wills, John Hope's first bequest was of his soul to almighty God.
