Cross Street Cottages

Three streets known locally as the “Square”, Cross Street-Stringer Street-Duke of York Square, are located between High Street and Station Road in an area mentioned on the 1876 map of Bradley Green, the original name for present day Biddulph. This was a mainly working class residential area in that period.
The Cross Street cottages shown above are pre 1876 and appear on the earliest available detailed map of the area - but most likely were built in the 1840s.The first two are relatively unchanged from that period with original brickwork and window sizes complete with stone lintels and sills. The third cottage was completely re built in the 1990s, this cottage was known as the Chapel house being owned and situated next to the Primitive Methodist Chapel –the home of its caretaker.
