Castle Cary coin hoard

Castle Cary’s position on major routes meant that it was at risk of destruction and looting during the Civil War. Five thousand clubmen gathered near the town in 1645 and later that year the new Model Army marched through the town. Either of these events would have caused prudent people to hide their valuables that year but one resident seems to have been prevented from recovering a cache of coins, possibly life savings or business takings. They were found under a floor in the centre of the town during renovations.
