1901 Census

This comprised the entire parish of Nately Scures including Heather Row, the houses on Hook Common and on Scures Hill, the Manor Farm, the Rectory and cottages near.

Development in the parish seems to have occurred by the time of this census as the population has grown to 273. The railway was employing eight men and temporary huts on Hook Common and near Newnham Bridge were occupied by 11 railway navvies born as far away as Wales, Devon, Warwickshire and Worcestershire, who were expanding the railway tracks to provide two lines each way. The foundry was still employing a few men but 19 were involved in the construction business as thatcher, plumber, painter, electrician, carpenter and joiner, brickmaker and bricklayer. Richard Sterry Wallis was listed as an architect and surveyor but is known for many prominent roles in Basingstoke including Chairman of the Council 1903/4 and 1905/6.
