1891 Census

The census for this period is split into Districts 14 and 15.  On the attached spreadsheet District 14 is identified as 1891A and District 15 as 1891B. Instead of being divided by The Street the parish has been split north and south of the railway. The Union Workhouse has been omitted and will be the subject of a separate discussion.

This return shows a peak in the total population in the parish - 1153 as opposed to 1035 in 1851.  The largest single form of employment remained agriculture though diversification continued with more professional people, railway workers and builders.  The most startling increase in the occupational structure was the rise in the number of domestic servants but this was due to the inclusion of Hackwood House among the schedules for the only time during the period 1851 to 1901.  This accounted for 26 extra domestic servants.
