1881 census

The parish continued to be a large village with 416 inhabitants. The occupations were mainly linked to farming, transport and allied rural trades. The large houses and farms together employed 54 domestic staff, a large number which reflects the high social status of the leading parishioners. Admiral Sir William Fanshawe Martin was still living in Upton Grey House. He now employed nine servants. Charles Hart at the Manor Farm employed 13 men and 5 boys on his 580 a. farm. Charles Butler at Tithe Barn Farm employed 11 men and 5 boys on his 560 a. The vicar, George Jeudwine, was now a young man of 32 years who had 4 sons aged 1-4. He employed a cook, 2 nurses and 2 housemaids to look after his family.
