1881 Census

The census for this period is split into Districts 12 and 13.  On the attached spreadsheet District 12 is identified as 1881A and District 13 as 1881B. The Union Workhouse has been omitted and will be the subject of a separate discussion.  The enumerator has commented that a better division of the parish would be north and south of the railway rather than The Street.

District 12 is described as part of the parish north of The Street commencing at the West End at the cottage near the Union taking the Cottages near the South Western Railway, Lickpit Farm, Binfield Farm, Four Lanes Farm, Cuffle Farm and cottages near the Toll House on the Reading Road, Baker’s Farm Cottages near Sherfield Farm, Razors and Scourcers Farm and the houses at Pyots Hill.

District 13 is part of the parish of Basing (Old) south of The Street including the Basing Mill, Basing Lodge, Blacklands Farm, The Decoy, Hale, Dean Land and Poor’s Farm and Moorham’s and that part of Waterend in Basing and thence to Blacksmith’s Shop and cottages near Tunworth Down thence to Hackwood Park Farm and the houses thereto and thence to Hackwood Mansion and the Stables Lodges and Gardens there belonging thence to the houses in Basing Field and terminating with Huish Farm.

By 1881 the number of professional people living in the parish had more than doubled since 1851, mostly due to an increase in the number involved in education, a total of eight people in all.  Apart from a slight rise in the population there were no significant changes in the pattern of occupation among the inhabitants of Basing.
