In the 1820s and 30s if you looked north from Basingstoke town centre two structures would dominate the top of the slope north of the River Loddon.

First cathedral was built between 1075 & 1092 by the Bishop Osmond a larger building was on the site circa 1120.

Prosperity came from the town’s many inns catering for travellers on the main London to Bristol road.

Marlborough’s position on the main London to Bristol road made it a centre of trade and industry.

Marlborough common exists at the heart of the settlement.

A market has occured in Marlborough throughout its history as was vital to trading in the town.
