Will and Inventory of Walter Madgwick/Magwicke, yeoman 1627

Madgwick’s will and inventory show him to have been prosperous with copyhold and freehold land in Dummer and Wotton St Lawrence and his goods valued at £211. He declared his hope for everlasting life in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ and left 10s. to Dummer church, 1s. to Winchester cathedral and 20s. to the poor of Dummer. He had 270 sheep and lambs, 28 cattle, pigs and poultry, wheat, barley and oats.  At this time, in this part of the county, the cloth industry was beginning to decline and turning to malting and brewing. Madgwick’s inventory may hint at this with equipment in his brewhouse and crops of barley.
