Inventory of Simon Cufaude, gentleman of Cufaude in the parish of Basing, 1619

Cufaude’s inventory would seem to be an incomplete record his property. It described the rich furniture and furnishings of several rooms, and his apparel, valued at almost half the total value of his estate, but made no reference to the farm, stock, outbuildings etc. of the moated manor house of Cufaud. By chance his gravestone at the Holy Ghost Chapel was seen and recorded by Dr Millard (Baigent & Millard, Basingstoke, 1889, p.169). He died aged 36 leaving a wife and five sons. The gravestone, for his wife too, gave valuable background information on the Cufaude family.
