Will and Inventory of John Palmer, 1612

Palmer’s will ended abruptly, after requesting burial in Basing and leaving 5s. to the church. The inventory was full and probate granted to his widow, presumably his heir. The property described was large and well appointed and made reference to a mill containing sacks, bushel measures etc., and his stock included cart horses and ‘load’ horses which would be appropriate for the work of a miller. There was some farming equipment too and hay and vetch in the stable and barley and oats in the barn but only six cattle and five pigs probably to supply the household needs. The ‘folkes chamber’ with two beds was maybe for the mill servants. His personal effects included good clothing and a sword. Total value £80 18s. 6d.
