Dummer Probate Material 1500 to 1701

Dummer is described as being in the county of Southampton, the old name for Hampshire and is located 8 kilometres/6 miles to the south-west of Basingstoke with the M3 motorway passing close to its north-eastern boundary. It lies primarily within gently undulating chalk downlands.

The Wills Group of the New Victoria County History project based in Basingstoke has transcribed 69 wills and 72 inventories for the period 1500-1701. The probate material reveals a sheep and wheat farming community with many prosperous residents in the early modern period. 

These transcriptions have been made from copies of original probate documents supplied by Hampshire Record Office and The National Archives. Words and place names have been modernized and punctuation added to make reading easier but names have been transcribed as written. Words in italics indicate omissions in the original document which have been added to make sense of the text. Words in square brackets indicate that they have been transcribed as seen but where the meaning is unclear.
