Will of William Oades of Dummer, rector 1731

Oades (d. 1730) left money for the education of six poor children in Preston Candover and for six poor children in Dummer. The remainder of his estate he left to the Master and Fellows of Pembroke College, Oxford, burdening them with dividing the rents and profits into eight parts, six of which were for family members and two parts for poor servitors or battelers of the College. His will includes annual bequests to the vicar of Preston Candover and rector of St Aldate, Oxford, to augment their income subject to the parishes partaking of Queen Ann’s Bounty. In a codicil William made directions about his burial and funeral arrangements, gifts to the poor in Dummer and for coal and wood for prisoners for debt in Winchester gaol. He directed that all his sermon notes and papers be burned.
