Will and Inventory of William Mulford 1562

Mulford left a short will, with the usual instructions about being buried in the church yard, with 2d. left to the cathedral at Winchester and a generous 3s. gift to the poor men's box in Basing church. His children and a maid all received 6s. 8d. but the main beneficiary was his wife who was also executrix. A well-equipped and sizable house, with malt in the barn, crops in the field which included wheat, barley, vetch, dredge and oats, also stock – cattle, pigs, a colt and poultry but no sheep. Twenty-nine cheeses were listed.  It is likely that this farm was in the north of the parish, off the chalk. Value £27 4s. 8d.
