1881 Census

The enumerator wrote about the census in this area: 'My first start in delivering householders’ schedules was so that I might take the census in Up Nately with as little trouble as possible by first starting at Hethro, thus following the unnamed road to Woodmans, and on to Strip, taking the cottages on the road leading to Greywell, and the Feathers Inn. 4 cottages in the Rookery and the farm houses and cottages in what may be called Nately Street, finishing this parish at the cottages near Five Lanes End. Returning to my parish of Andwell extra parochial to finish.

This being my third time of collecting the census, I must add that I met with the papers filled in better and less trouble collecting them.

11th April 1881

Thomas Hutton, Andwell Mill'

The population had grown to 45 with the inclusion of Priory House and the two cottages on the moor were now occupied, one by a master blacksmith possibly connected with farm work or with the iron foundry in neighbouring Hook. The miller, Thomas Hutton, was now married and was also described as a farmer of 89 a. employing 12 workers.
