Will and inventory of Oliver Wallop, Knight, 1566

Oliver Wallop’s will opens with a Protestant declaration of faith and the wish to be buried at ‘Farley Mortimer’- the early form of the place-name which became Farleigh Wallop. The inventory provides valuable information of the house which was largely destroyed by fire in the 1660s. The contents of the 23 rooms included silver, gold, tapestries and armour. Surprisingly, a limited number of animals are mentioned: 3 geldings, 9 cows and a bull and 332 sheep. No crops are included. A soldier not a farmer, presumably most land was leased out.
