Will and Inventory of Brian Mathewe, yeoman of Hoddington, Upton Grey, 1619

Mathewe was Lord of the Manor of Hoddington and after his death at the age of 40 his estate was valued at £495 18s. 4d., mostly in crops and livestock. He made bequests of £100 to each of his four children, which, with other bequests, must have left very little for his widow. His son and heir, also Brian, was just eight years old when his father died, but was nevertheless able to purchase the freehold of Hoddington before his death aged 35.
