Will and inventory of James Matthew, yeoman, 1583

Matthew left an estate totalling £95, some of which he bequeathed to his children. He had 20 acres of wheat as well as other crops and the wheat in the barn amounted to almost a third of his total inventory. In addition, he left substantial bequests to most of his children, including the manor and lands in Upton Grey, plus land in Heckfield. In some cases the bequests of property were subject to the payment of the relevant dues to their brother Andrewe as lord of the manor of Upton Grey. The residue went to Andrewe, his sole executor.
